Mini-expo: Girls On Top
An ode to young makers
14 Dec 2024 - 31 Aug 2025
Amsterdam Museum on the AmstelNew generation
As part of the exhibition Women of Amsterdam - an ode, young makers from Amsterdam are exploring different perspectives on gender, identity, and feminism. Their work will be periodically shown as pop-up exhibitions under the title Girls On Top on Studio Panorama. In doing this, we provide a platform for the voices of a new generation.
Visitors can participate in performances, workshops, discussions, and film screenings. These gatherings offer space to think about current gender issues. You can find the agenda for Girls On Top on this page.
Ruby Cruden
31 January- 2 February 2025
The first Girls On Top artist is Ruby Cruden. Ruby Cruden is a photographer and director. Her photography and film oeuvre is characterized by a colorful, melancholic atmosphere that focuses on self-celebration, feminism and inclusion. As a black, queer woman with ADHD, she continuously looks at her surroundings through a unique lens, challenging the viewer to also open up to a different approach to the world around us. Her activism is reflected in the form of a search for the boundaries of gender, race and identity.
Ruby photographs with analog cameras. Not only because the entire process requires calm and focus, but also because the nostalgic atmosphere of shooting on film communicates her desire for a softer world.
After her Edison nomination for Best Music Video 2021 (Merol - KNALDRANG) which she directed and filmed, she decided to pursue her ambition as a filmmaker and director in addition to photography. Her work has previously appeared with Warner Music, Netflix and Nike.
About the exhibition
In the exhibition Women of Amsterdam - an ode, visitors are introduced to more than a hundred women who have left their mark on the city over the centuries, from inspiring artists to influential entrepreneurs, and from tireless activists to dedicated figures in working-class neighborhoods. Women who have each contributed or meant something to the city of Amsterdam and its inhabitants are thrust into the spotlight, whether through an object from the collection or a personal item on loan. Their story, and why they mattered, is told.
Contemporary art
Ten artists and designers were asked by the Amsterdam Museum to create a new work for the exhibition. Mina Abouzahra, Tyna Adebowale, Danielle Alhassid, Mounira Al Solh, Yamuna Forzani and Céline Hurka, Jan Hoek and Duran Lantink, Çiğdem Yüksel, Charlott Markus, Sarah van Sonsbeeck, Studio L A, Hedy Tjin They drew inspiration from women who made an impact on them, and therefore on Amsterdam.
Studio Panorama
On the roof and in the heart of the Amsterdam Museum's collection at Amstel 51 you can find Studio Panorama. New presentations by artists, performers or collectives can be seen here all the time. The expositions at Studio Panorama provide a new, contemporary perspective on the objects on the walls. Studio LA (Lorien Beijaert and Arna Mačkić) designed an open space with abstract objects and shapes, which makers can use to show their work and arrange this space in their own way.
Studio Panorama can be visited with a regular admission ticket.
