    Reintroducing...

Amsterdam Museum owns one of the oldest fashion collections in the Netherlands. With approximately 10,000 objects, the collection contains a wealth of historical and contemporary fashion. Due to the fragility of textiles, this collection is shown to the general public in a limited way. With Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives, the fashion collection reintroduces itself to the visitor in a multi-sensory manner.

The mini-expo Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives is located on Studio Panorama, which can be visited with a regular admission ticket between August 23 and November 10.

Tip: Join us on September 3rd during Amsterdam Fashion Week for a talk with curator Roberto Luis Martins, Mariette Hoitink and designers Denzel Veerkamp and Tess van Zalinge. A conversation about the meaning of fashion past, present and future. Who decides what is of value in a museum and what is the importance of collection building for the fashion world? New acquisitions

With fashion and style we say who we are, what time we live in, and what group we want to belong to. And also what we stand for, what we believe in, and where we want to go. From the moment a piece of clothing enters a museum collection, it assumes a different function. Specialists care for it, and it is studied together with the corresponding communities. Occasionally, it is exhibited to the public. The mini-exhibition Unboxing: Fashion from the Archives shows samples from the museum’s fashion collection and explores how such collections can be presented in new ways. From a 16th-century breastplate and new acquisitions by leading Amsterdam designers like Mohamed Benchellal and Tess van Zalinge, to the Pink Feather Explosion dress by David Laport, worn by pop icon Rihanna.

With Unboxing, we 'unpack'. Take a look behind the scenes, feel a 19th-century gown, and breathe in the scent of a hidden piece of clothing.

    The curators

    Roberto Luis Martins
Roberto Luis Martins (1994) is curator of Fashion and Popular Culture at the Amsterdam Museum. In his projects, multi-voicedness, multi-sensory and intergenerational transmission are central themes. Prior to this, Luis Martins co-curated the exhibitions Continue This Thread. Karim Adduchi x Tess van Zalinge, about the power of handcrafting techniques, and Grand March. A Historic House through a Ballroom Lens, about the artistic voices of ballroom house House of Vineyard.

"With Unboxing, we want to make the stories within Panorama Amsterdam even more tangible and accessible. We present some recent acquisitions by makers who have caused a furor, with works by Mohamed Benchellal, Tess van Zalinge and the world-famous Feather Dress by David Laport worn by pop star Rihanna. We are also showing some 'forgotten' garments, such as a sock purse, a guimpe and a brain patch."

    Emma Waslander
Emma Waslander (1990) works as Public Program Curator and is Content Coordinator of Studio Panorama. She is creative in various media, with a focus and passion for projects that help shape and change the cultural landscape.

"Because of the fragility of textiles, it is rare to exhibit fashion, so we are always looking for new and innovative ways to share our collection with the public. These include public programming and depot visits but also experimenting with digital solutions such as 360 degree photography, the use of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and the latest AI techniques."

    Studio Panorama

On the roof and in the heart of the Amsterdam Museum's collection at Amstel 51 you can find Studio Panorama. New presentations by artists, performers or collectives can be seen here all the time. The expositions at Studio Panorama provide a new, contemporary perspective on the objects on the walls. Studio LA (Lorien Beijaert and Arna Mačkić) designed an open space with abstract objects and shapes, which makers can use to show their work and arrange this space in their own way.

Studio Panorama can be visited with a regular admission ticket.
