Homeless in the city
Stories from the street

Amsterdam Museum on the AmstelOn view from 14 February
For many people, Amsterdam is home. However, not all Amsterdammers have a roof over their heads. At least 17,000 people in the city are homeless or itinerant—more than ever before. Itinerant persons have no fixed abode: they move from couch to couch, from friend to family member to acquaintance. For homeless (or unhoused) persons, this option is not available; they must find their place on the street.
The exhibition Homeless in the city is part of the exhibition series Collecting the City in which we work with various communities and organisations to collect and present the vibrant city of Amsterdam.
A complex problem
Homelessness and itinerancy is a complex, growing problem affecting a diverse group of Amsterdammers. It impacts both young and old, employed and unemployed persons. From those born and raised in Amsterdam to migrants to the city, the increasing housing shortage and lack of affordable (rental) housing can affect anyone. A single setback such as a dismissal, separation, or health issues can result in the loss of a home. In some cases, finding a new place turns out to be too difficult.
The exhibition is a joint effort together with De Regenboog Groep and HVO-Querido, two organizations committed to providing support, shelter, and daytime activities for homeless and itinerant people. Together we tell the stories of the people behind the numbers.

Collecting the City #5
The Collecting the City exhibition spaces are the place where the Amsterdam Museum ‘collects’ and presents our lively city, in cooperation with various parties and groups in the city. Here, neighbourhood museums, networks, local artists and inspired residents share their stories and objects about the city of Amsterdam. Every six months, new makers are invited to show their ideas. Think of an innovative perspective on the past, a beautiful or painful moment in the present or a new future vision of the city.
The exhibition partners for Homeless in the city are De Regenboog Groep and HVO-Querido.
The Amsterdam Museum is structurally supported by Main Partners Gemeente Amsterdam and VriendenLoterij and Main Partner Education ELJA Foundation.
