Female Gaze Tours
Amsterdam Museum on the Amstel
Discover Amsterdam through the eyes of Amsterdam women and their works.
Amsterdam Museum Female Gaze Tour, 2022, Rachel Ecclestone
Guided tours
Visitors are introduced to the rich past and present of Amsterdam’s women through various stories, artworks, and objects.
We delve into the past with famous women such as Aletta Jacobs and Thérèse Schwartze, but also encounter lesser-known women such as Sara de Swart. A sculptor and art collector, she belonged to the Tachtigers literary group and supported many of the women involved in it financially. She traveled extensively with her life partner Emilie van Kerckhoff, including to the Dutch East Indies.
The tour also discusses the work and gifts of Sophia Adriana Lopez Suasso-de Bruijn and Louisa Willet-Holthuysen. In addition, we examine the feminist movement in the 20th century and inequality during emancipatory struggle by white and black women, as well as look at the present through works by Amsterdam artists Naomie Pieter, Willemieke Kars, and Fong Leng.
