Gert Jan Kocken (Revenstein, Netherlands, 1971) is a photographer and visual artist.
His work is based on ongoing research into the memory and visual representation of pivotal periods in world history, like the Second World War. In our collective memory, such periods consist of complex constellations of facts, interpretations, opinions, and visual impressions. By juxtaposing historical images and texts in new ways, he provides the viewer with different perspectives, which in turn encourage reflection. Kocken studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam
