AMJournal #2: Curated Short Essays by Students
History
AM Journal
Amsterdam
Historian Dr. Tim Verlaan was the guest-editor of Amsterdam Museum Journal's second edition ‘Deconstructing Gentrification'. The board and he curated and peer reviewed two short essays written by students who took Verlaan’s’ MA course about ‘Housing as a Right’. These students examined how social movements and political thinkers have viewed the housing question since the Industrial Revolution, and what actions they took to bring about social change. Because obviously, the history of gentrification could not be left undiscussed.
Gentrification and Artists
In the first essay Sanci Koper reflects on the dubious role of artists in processes of gentrification in Amsterdam. In the Netherlands, the government seems to use culture and creativity as means to make neighborhoods more attractive, but how do artists view this?
The Discovery of Gentrification
In the second essay Sam van Donselaar and Simon Serné dive into the ‘discovery of gentrification’ in Dutch newspapers by analyzing media coverage on the gentrification of the Jordaan in the 70s and 80s. Because how was gentrification framed then?
