Interview
The second issue of Amsterdam Museum Journal ‘Deconstructing Gentrification’ introduces ‘The Dialogue’. In The Dialogue, two leading experts in the field dive into the issue's theme. As it's formatted as a conversation between two peers, The Dialogue offers an accessible yet academically anchored perspective on the central theme.
Tim Verlaan and Suleiman Osman
For this edition, guest-editor Dr. Tim Verlaan had a conversation with Prof. Dr. Suleiman Osman. Both Verlaan and Osman approach gentrification from a historical perspective, although Osman mainly focusses on the US and Verlaan on The Netherlands. In The Dialogue, the two renowned experts discuss the importance of this historical approach, the relationship between gentrification and displacement, and the connection between gentrification and authenticity.
Why Suleiman Osman?
Verlaan says the following about why he wanted to talk to Osman: “His book The Invention of Brownstone Brooklyn radically changed my view of post-war urban history and steered my research agenda into the direction of gentrification. Suleiman focuses on gentrification in incredible detail and uses rich source materials, this inspired me to investigate similar patterns of post-war urban change in European cities.”
