    Het Amsterdam Museum.

Strolling through Amsterdam, you are surrounded by living history and art. Amsterdam is a dynamic museum where every inhabitant, canal and building tells a story about the past, present, and future. The Amsterdam Museum collects these stories. Would you like to get to know Amsterdam (even) better? Visit our exhibitions in the historic building at Amstel 51.

We offer a free audio tour in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, and free admission for children up to 17 years. If you have an IAmsterdam City Card, you will get free admission.

    This city writes history

Amsterdam was and is a dynamic city with an ever-changing population and just as many visions of the city. The Amsterdam Museum presents stories and objects that relate to that wide range of views of the city.

Did you know that Louis Napoleon, King of Holland, decided Amsterdam should be the capital of the Netherlands? Or that the world’s first same-sex marriage occurred in Amsterdam?

    This city makes art

Amsterdam breathes art. Throughout the city, art is admired, created, and reinvented. From 17th-century paintings to street art, it can be found everywhere in Amsterdam. On view at the Amsterdam Museum:

    • The Anatomy Lesson of Jan Deijman (1656), a painting by Rembrandt
    • M54 (2017) by Brian Elstak
    • Frank Rijkaard and Patrick Kluivert (2013) by Kamp Seedorf.
